WHAT WE DO

Peer Mentoring
Our MAPS chapter is engaged in peer mentoring between Upperclassmen and Lowerclassmen who are pursuing an interest in the health professions. Through mentoring, our members are able to better transition into higher education and seek advice that will help them towards their goals.

Conferences
Our MAPS chapter attends a number of conferences through SNMA on a state, regional, and national scale. These conferences allow members to form contacts with numerous professionals, meet their peers from around the country and enjoy a number of presentations.

Minorities In Medicine Outreach Week
Every spring, in collaboration with the SNMA chapter we give hands on exposure to MAPS members into the University of Missouri School of Medicine by allowing them to shadow doctors on occasion during the week, attend lectures and problem base learning at the medical school with current medical students and participate in workshops throughout the week.

Community Service
Continual community service is encouraged by MAPS. Our volunteer coordinator takes responsibility in helping place members in volunteer settings that allow them to get hands on experience and give back to the community. We also participate in service monthly at the Central Missouri Food Bank.

Health Professions Recruitment Education Program
As the annual project for 2006-2007, our members will visit with junior and senior high school students in the Columbia area about the careers in the health professions, specifically targeting minority students with the goal of increasing the presence of minorities in medical careers. This program designed by the UMC chapter of M.A.P.S hopes to increase the number of the underrepresented minorities in these health professions to ensure success and achievement to the youths within the Columbia community.

Health Disparities Week
As the annual project for 2007-2008, Health Disparities Week is aimed at bringing awareness on MU’s campus about certain issues of inequality. Through forums and other forms of information, our goal is to get our student body engaged.

Wheelchairs For Africa
As the annual project for 2005-2006, MAPS organized a project to collect wheelchairs and funds to be sent to medical institutions in various needy regions in Africa in order to contribute towards alleviating medical problems in Africa.
