We are so pleased that you are considering graduate work at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Our department offers programs of study leading to MA and Ph.D. degrees in both art history and classical archaeology.

Art history and classical archaeology have been taught on our campus since the late 19th century. Our department is small but strong. The majority of our faculty are tenured and all members are well-known within their respective fields. The faculty are friendly, very willing to help and they strongly support the department's grad students, irrespective of field. Our department also has close ties with the departments of Classical Studies, Anthropology and History.

There are several incentives for you to consider graduate study at UMC. One of the greatest resources for the students here is our access to the Museum of Art and Archaeology, located in Pickard Hall along with our department. Often classes will provide students with 'hands-on' access to works of art, both ancient and modern. Other important resources for teaching and specialized research include extensive holdings of Ellis Library, the Missouri Historical Society, and the Western Historical Manuscript Collection. The University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) allows researchers to perform neutron activation analysis on archaeological materials with which they are working. Furthermore, the many galleries and museums of both St. Louis and Kansas City are only two hours away by car.

We hope that this message has provided you with additional reasons to consider joining us at the Department of Art History and Archaeology at the University of Missouri-Columbia. On behalf of the graduate students here - Welcome!
